After countless rumours, leaks, and speculation, Nintendo have confirmed the existence of the Switch 2 in a first look trailer. The two minute video is very light on details, focussing on the design changes from the original, as well as a brief explanation of backwards compatibility.

Published on the official Nintendo of America YouTube Channel today (16th January 2025), the trailer highlights a few key design changes from the original Switch, while confirming the name is simply ‘Switch 2’.

The most notable difference is the refreshed Joy-Cons, which are much larger and replaces the rail connection with a nifty snap-on mechanic. On top of this, the versatile controllers appear taller and wider, leading to a more ergonomic design that will undoubtedly please a wide range of fans.

Another key design change is the larger screen. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any specific details on the size and whether it would include an OLED panel. However, if leaks and reports are to be beleived, the Switch 2 will feature an 8-inch screen that ditches the OLED panel.

In terms of aesthetics, the Switch 2 has also seen major changes, with a sleek black design that includes a hint of the iconic neon blue and red peeking through each joy-con. This allows the new console to conform with other modern consoles while keeping some unique elements.

Other noticeable features include a revitalised kickstand that is fully adjustable, along with two USB-C ports on the top and bottom of the device, making charging much easier.

At the end of the trailer, Nintendo provided some clarity on the Switch 2’s backwards compatibility with the previous iteration. And the answer was essentially ‘it’s complicated’. While most Switch games will be available on Switch 2 -including Nintendo Switch Online features- the new console will contain a number of exclusive titles.

Whether this will be simply dure to hardware limitations or a strategy from Nintendo to get enthusiasts to pick up the new console is uncertain. As a result, we’ll have to wait for more details on this and other unanswered questions on April 2nd, when Nintendo host a Switch 2 themed Direct.
