2023 was a great year for gaming, and truly felt like the first 12 months jam-packed with releases since the launch of the current generation of consoles. However, 2024 looks to be an even greater year, with a handful of epic titles already set to land on all platforms.

But what games are we keeping our eyes on this year? Here’s all of the games we’re excited to learn more about within the next calendar year, and we’re hoping that you’ll be eagerly waiting one of these titles too!

  1. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
  2. Rise of the Ronin
  3. Hades II
  4. Avowed
  5. Black Myth: Wukong
  6. Star Wars Outlaws
  7. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
  8. Tales of Kenzera: Zau

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Release Date: 18th January 2024

Our first pick is already out in the wild, but I haven’t had the chance to pick up Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown yet. When it was first announced, many were shocked to hear this metroidvania was being devloped by Ubisoft.

However, as someone who has played through most of the AC Chronicles series, the thought of a more fleshed out version of these action platformers – in a world I had yet to discover – immediately grabbed my attention.

After playing through the demo and watching numerous glowing reviews since release, the latest twist on this historic franchise is firmly at the top of my wishlist.

Rise of the Ronin

Release Date: 22nd March 2024

The tales of the Samurai have always been a fascinating topic for me. Many within the media industry seem to agree, as their code of honour, fighting style, and adventures are constantly used as inspiration for the next great game or movie.

The latest within this long list of journeys is Rise of the Ronin, an open-world RPG from Team Ninja that takes place within the mid-19th century. As you roam Japan as a lone warrior, you’ll stumble across new places and people that will change the fate of the land forever.

As a long-time fan of the studio and inspiration behind this project, Rise of the Ronin has certainly sparked my interest.

Hades II

Release Date: Summer 2024 (Early Access)

After the huge success of the original Hades, Supergiant Games are returning to the underworld this year. If they can come close to replicating the wonderful storytelling and gripping action from Zagreus’ journey, then Hades II is bound to be one of the biggest games of the year.

This time around, players will be taking control of Melinoe, Zagreus’ sister and princess of the underworld, as she takes on the Titans with aid from the Olympians. Like the original, each run will be of full of surprises, with every failure progressing the story and making you stronger.

Whilst we’re not yet sure of when to expect a full release, Hades II will be entering early access in Q2 of 2024, and I can’t wait!

Avowed

Release Date: Fall 2024

Whilst it’s unlikely that we’ll hear anything about the latest entry into the Elder Scrolls franchise anytime soon, Avowed looks to fill the void. From the same studio that developed Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds, this game is set to put a satirical and morally intruiging twist on the fantasy genre.

We’ve already got a glimpse of what to expect from this title at Xbox’s 2024 Developer Direct, with the magic-induced combat and morally complex questlines shown off looking to provide an interesting challenge to RPG lovers.

As someone who loved the stories and atmosphere within The Outer Worlds, this release has been on my radar for quite some time. Fortunately, I won’t have to wait much longer, as Avowed is set to arrive on Xbox and PC by the end of 2024.

Black Myth: Wukong

Release Date: 20th August 2024

The latest game to take a stab at the Soulslike genre is Black Myth: Wukong. This game is inspired by Journey to the West, a classic chinese novel that puts a fictional twist on a buddhist monk’s pilgramage to find ancient texts.

Along this weird and wonderful journey, players will encountered a number of mythical beasts, which will need to be vanquished in order to continue the voyage.

With multiple trailers showing off the challenging combat and bizarre foes that will be blocking your path, this game looks to be another great entry into the soulslike genre.

Star Wars Outlaws

Release Date: TBC 2024

The trailer for Star Wars Outlaws left fans of the franchise in absolute shock at Summer Game Fest last year. Not only does this title look like the scroundrel-based action-adventure that fans have been clambering for, but it also looked nothing like the Ubisoft games we’ve become accustomed to.

Since the start of the Series X/S and PS5 generation, Ubisoft’s reputation has been slowly deteriating, with fans criticising the rinse and repeat gameplay mechanics and executive decisions. However, the company have recently been experimenting with new formats to get long-term fans back on side.

Whether Star Wars Outlaws will help or hinder Ubisoft’s redemption arc is yet to be seen. However, after the excellent lineup of Star Wars games over recent years, I’m cautiously optimistic about this game.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Release Date: TBC 2024

Since it was announced that Bethesda were developing an Indiana Jones game, gamers across the globe have been trying to uncover the great mystery of what this title would be. Would we see an adaptation of Indy’s classic tales? Or would Todd Howard be able to create his own adventure within this universe?

Thankfully, Xbox provided some answers in their January 2024 Developer Direct, where we were introduced to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. After seeing first-person gameplay, where everyone’s favourite archaeologist took down some lackies, as well as a glimpse of the puzzles we’d have to unlock, fans are hoping this game can put the turbulent series back on track.

Whilst I’ve never been a huge fan of the Indiana Jones franchise, it will be interesting to see how this beloved franchise transfers from the big screen to the world of gaming.

Tales of Kenzera: Zau

Another metroidvania that is looking to impress this year is Tales of Kenzera: Zau. Inspired by the Bantu Tales, Zau is looking to master the ranged and close-quarters combat of the Sun and Moon masks, as he looks to overcome the loss of his father.

What makes this story even more gripping is the close ties it has to the CEO of Surgent Studios, Abubakar Salim. He developed the game to honour his late father, whilst also being able to channel his own grief. Abu is also known for his acting roles, lending his voice to one of my favourite Assassin’s Creed characters – Bayek of Siwa.

After catching a glimpse of this game at the 2023 Game Awards, as well as learning it would be part of the rather successful EA Originals Series, I knew that Tales of Kenzera: Zau had to be on my list of games to play in 2024.
